ALBRIGHTON & DISTRICT CIVIC SOCIETY (ADCS)

(Albrighton, Boningale, Donington-with-Boscobel and Tong)

Flowers, Bulbs and Planters
We hope everyone is pleased with the great display of daffodils around the villages – particularly  see those along Newport Rd, Loak Rd/Bowling Green Lane roundabout & verges and at the junction of Rectory Rd/Newport Rd. They are also starting to come out in all the other places where our volunteer teams of bulb planters have been at work.
Chris Pitchford and Phyl Woodman, with help from our other volunteers, have kept the Planters in the High Street refreshed and looking good. We are very grateful to Mr & Mrs David Garvey and to the staff of Walter Smith Butchers who water two of the Planters near to them.
We plan to buy another planter which will be located on the High St – please watch this space.

Planning Application     Shropshire Council Planning Ref 16/01223
Many will be aware that the owner of the Garage & Spar Shop at Cosford, Mr Gohill, has bought 79/81 High St (the ex-Shop4Ducks shop) between the Methodist’s Church and the Spa Shop (which he already owns). He has applied for planning permission to extend the front of 79/81 High St to bring its frontage in line with the Spa Shop and Shropshire Council Planners invite support or objections to this application. One of the main aims of the Society is to encourage well designed aesthetically appealing buildings to enhance our villages.
We have reviewed the Application and its associated plans and the Society fully supports this application – please see our support letter sent to Shropshire Council’s planning portal.
As this is a building right at the centre of the High St and in a prominent location and indeed in the conservation area we felt it may be useful if we set out the Civic Society Committee’s reasons for our support.
The existing ex-Shop4Ducks building has a more modern style and is at odds with the more historic buildings in the vicinity. The proposed extension will cover the front of the existing building.  The proposed building extension will have traditional clay roof tiles, red brick walls and wooden painted windows all of which are more in keeping with nearby buildings.
Parking: Mr Gohill already owns the building and it could be opened as it is to complement his existing Spa shop .....even without the proposed extension. Just re-opening the existing building as a shop will cause more traffic and a greater need for parking nearby whether the extension is built or not. Thus the extension itself is unlikely to further increase the need for parking. It is not a case of comparing the existing need for parking near an empty shop with that of an operating shop.
The Society does not expect our villages to be frozen in time and we welcome appropriate development and all we wish to do is to make sure buildings are well designed, with appropriate materials and in keeping with their surroundings and to enhance our community – we believe that this proposal meets these criteria and we trust that the planning authority will make sure it complies with the details promised in the application.
